3-Way Dimmer Installation
Author: TD Posted Date: 3/28/2008 11:49:54 AM I just bought 2 new dimmer that say they are 3-Way but when I wire them up they don't work? They are Levitron SureSlide dimmers model 6623-PW. I want to be able to dim my lights from either location. Does anyone know what I need to do?

Ok, let me explain what you have here. The Leviton SureSlide dimmers are electro-mechanical dimmers. This means they incorporate both a mechanical switch device and some electronics. These are 3-Way dimmers that are always used in conjunction with a standard 3-way switch. This is true for all electro-mechanical dimmers regardless of manufacturer. Now for a solution to your problem.
If you use a Digital dimmer like many manufactured by Leviton, you have the ability to have full dimming control at all points. You can actually have up to 10 points of control with certain dimmers. This is accomplished by having a single Master Dimmer and using what Leviton calls remotes for all secondary locations. The term remote is confusing because it is not portable like a hand held remote, but is a slave switch that sends a signal to the Master, which actually is controlling the light fixture load. You need to look at using a Digital dimmer for your application. Here is a link to the dimmers that Leviton offers.

The Acenti (my personal favorite), the Vizia, Mural and TrueTouch are all Digital Dimmers. The balance of the product offering is electro-mechanical dimmers that use mechanical 3-way switches for 3-way applications.
I hope this helped explain and provided a good solution.
