Because of their vertical ganging, dimmers have to be "derated" to prevent heat buildup. Derating allows you to limit a dimmer's usage to less than full wattage. This requires, typically, the removal of part of the metallic mounting strap that help dissipate heat from within. You'll want to do this with any multiple ganging setup.
Although you should consult your particular model's instructions for specifics, the following table provides a good rule-of-thumb for derating:
The metal mounting strap on a dimmer will remove heat from the device. Dimmers designed for heavier lighting loads, as well, use architectural metallic fins as heat sinks. This makes for a cooled-down, smooth operation with up to 2000 Watt loads.
Just a Note: Derating is not optional. You should always add your load value before choosing a particular dimmer type.
