Fully Enabling a Modern Home with Modules

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 12/22/2008 5:06:20 PM
Let's say that you have a Leviton media center enclosure box (#47605-140) in your house, and just need a way to set up cable, phone, TV, and/or internet lines. As an example, I'll use a house with 4 phones and 5 televisions where all wiring is coming out of the walls and is installation-ready. The best module for this would be Leviton Cat. No. 47606-BNP, which fits snugly inside an enclosure box like the one I mentioned above. This is your basic home networking module that can handle up to six 4-line telephone connections and can also route video to 6 locations. The only other things you should need, of course, are all of the connectors for your wires. Normally a phone/cable company will supply these. What's great about all of the Leviton Integrated Networks products is they offer a centralized system for dealing with all sorts of audio/video signals in a home. Recommendations for Driveway Occupancy Sensing

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 12/22/2008 1:59:16 PM
Driveways, just like stairways, are one of the trickier places that you might want to install an occupancy sensor. There was a particular customer recently who wanted to place a hard-wired, 110 Volt Motion Detector in their driveway. They needed to mount it in the middle of a two-car garage, where there were a variety of lights along the garage. It was meant to only detect a car pulling into the driveway, so to make things slightly more difficult, the sensor needed to not be activated by street traffic.   So what did our support team end up recommending?   The best Leviton device for this application is definitely a Leviton PS200-10W. It is a 200 degree sensor, and you can actually adjust sensitivity in the product so it won't be falsely triggered by normal traffic. Read Entire Post

What "Self Grounding" Really Means

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 11/12/2008 8:19:02 AM
With some confusion over the meaning of "self grounding" receptacles, I just wanted to clarify it a little. Some customers might think this means they don't need any ground wire connected to the receptacle, but actually, that's not correct.   Self Grounding just means that if the receptacle is installed in a metal box that is grounded through the conduit, then the strap will provide a ground to the device. We would still recommend that you always use a regular ground wire too.   Here are some examples of the types of self-grounding receptacles we offer:   http://www.onestopbuy.com/Duplex-(Best)-12212.asp http://www.onestopbuy.com/Duplex-Receptacles-12218.asp Read Entire Post

Acenti and Decora Color Matches

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 10/7/2008 4:25:21 PM
I've encountered a number of customers wanting to know about similarities between Acenti and Decora colors. They have different names, of course, but most of the color tones are virtually the same. They're so close that only an unusually discerning person could ever detect any difference.   Here's a table I made for quick and easy reference:   Acenti (matte finish) Decora (glossy finish) Alabaster White Natural Almond Onyx Black Slate Gray Driftwood Ivory Sand Natural (slightly lighter and more yellow) Quartz (more pinkish hue) Natural Cocoa Brown Read Entire Post

How About Occupancy Sensing on a Staircase?

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 9/5/2008 12:07:29 PM
For users of Occupancy Sensors, their proven benefits and reduction of consumption will be something a lot of us are already familiar with. These are devices that can be placed in household areas like garages, bathrooms, bedrooms, and kitchens, and used effectively in all these locations for energy savings.   I'd like to talk about using occupancy sensors for stairways in particular. Say you'd like to add some 3-way switches at the top and bottom of a stairway, just to control a couple of fluorescent fixtures. What's going to be your best choice?   Stairs can be a little trickier because normal sensors' fields of view will only reach straight out at a distance of 4 feet and cannot actually sense below that field of view. Also, they will respond only from motion at the top and at the bottom of stairs, but not in between.   For stairs, I would say that the best choice would be two ODS10-ID Series switches. The optimal setting is 10 Minutes before every shutoff, so that there will never be an issue where someone is on the stairs and the lights go out ... Read Entire Post

Installing a Leviton 4-Way Dimmer with Remotes

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 9/4/2008 12:15:19 PM
We've had a whole heap of questions this month about Leviton dimmer set ups. One of the big questions that I'd like to address - which switch should someone have in the 4-way position when using an ATE06-1LE Acenti dimmer?   You would team this dimmer with two AT00R-1LE Acenti remotes (also called "slave" units). So here there is a total of three switches. By using this particular remote model number, you're getting two matching remotes that look identical to the ATE06-1LE. You also need to make sure everything is set up correctly with these Acenti switches. Any installer should always: Have a neutral wire at all switch locations. Know the proper location for the dimmer in this operation. The dimmer needs to feed to the load. For more info, I'd recommended reading through Leviton's installation manual for Acenti devices here. Diagram 10 on Page 11 lays out this 4-way setup in good detail.   Just a note here as well. I'm using the catalog numbers for Leviton's new Acenti line. The original Acenti devices in this case are ACE06-1LE (dimmer) and ACE0 ... Read Entire Post

What About Items in Bulk Quantities?

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 9/2/2008 10:18:21 AM
A lot of customers can be caught off guard by products like Leviton Cat. No. 357-9. We sell these only in quantities of 200, so if you're wanting to purchase just one of these, you may not be sure what your other option is.   Here's the easiest answer on a product like this... 357-9 is an Original Equipment Manufacturers (OEM) pack. This means it's geared specifically toward businesses that need parts for fixtures, appliances, pressure washers, vending machines, and so on. If as an individual you need a much smaller amount than this, you can go with Cat. No. 357-8. It's the exact same socket but available in any quantity.   And if you're ever taken back by any other bulk OEM product like this, be sure to contact our Tech Support team at 1-877-633-5212 or online. We'll link you to an item that you can actually use! Tread Lightly When Connecting Devices!

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 8/15/2008 10:35:23 AM
Customers have needed help in connecting the wiring in Occupancy Sensor devices correctly. One person, for example, needed to connect a PR150 sensor. Their situation involved 4 cables from inside the wall (2 black and 2 white) and the green, red, and black wires coming out of the device. So their question was - essentially - what connects to what? The solution is usually a simple one. But our support team has to be careful in terms of giving advice for these problems, especially because they can't assume liability when there is no way for them to test the lines. The wiring situation in any given location could be completely different from what we might expect. In a proper installation, a black wire needs to be connected to the power lead coming to the switch and the red wire needs to connect to the lighting fixture. Again, this particular customer had 2 black and 2 white wires coming out the wall - 4 in total. It turned out that the each pair of wires were connected to each other originally. The obvious issue with this is that it isn't conventional wiring. We'd ... Read Entire Post

Receptacles That Solve Child Safety Issues

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 8/14/2008 3:03:17 PM
Child safety has virtually always been an issue with electrical receptacles. Those typical situations where someone could be injured have some consistent characteristics. The victim is usually a male child under 3 years old, who sticks a hairpin or a similar object (i.e. keys, wire, screw, nail, or a finger alone) into a household receptacle, and as a result suffers up to 2nd-degree burns from electricity. This is more common of an occurrence than some might think. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) estimates that between 1991 and 2001, more than 24,000 children under 10 years old had to be taken to the Emergency Room for this same electrical injury scenario. That amounts to around 7 children per day. And 89% of these children were under 6 years old! [See Source] This just shouldn‘t be an “inevitable” risk anymore. We can take responsibility for safety now, even better than before, because of child-resistant and tamper-proof devices. First, Leviton has its “Kiddy Cop” line that features Child-Resistant Wallplates:   http://www.onestopbuy.com ... Read Entire Post

Latest Changes to Leviton's Acenti Dimmer Line

Author: Chris B        Posted Date: 8/8/2008 4:14:19 PM
Acenti dimmers have changed! It's not an enormous deal but something we'd like to inform new and returning customers about. There has basically been an outward change to Acenti's appearance; nothing in the line's technical design has changed, just the look. Because of this, Leviton will eventually be replacing all original Acenti dimmer models with the updated look. Once the new design is in place, it will of course become the default that will appear in our online Leviton catalog. The good news is that we've bought up as much of these old stock dimmers and remotes as we could. OneStopBuy.com is encouraging customers, especially those who need consistency in renovation projects they may have already started, to take the opportunity to purchase the original design before it is discontinued.   We now have both the Original and New designs available for purchase: http://www.onestopbuy.com/Dimmers-12029.asp Read Entire Post
