Tread Lightly When Connecting Devices!

Customers have needed help in connecting the wiring in Occupancy Sensor devices correctly. One person, for example, needed to connect a PR150 sensor. Their situation involved 4 cables from inside the wall (2 black and 2 white) and the green, red, and black wires coming out of the device. So their question was - essentially - what connects to what?
The solution is usually a simple one. But our support team has to be careful in terms of giving advice for these problems, especially because they can't assume liability when there is no way for them to test the lines. The wiring situation in any given location could be completely different from what we might expect.
In a proper installation, a black wire needs to be connected to the power lead coming to the switch and the red wire needs to connect to the lighting fixture. Again, this particular customer had 2 black and 2 white wires coming out the wall - 4 in total. It turned out that the each pair of wires were connected to each other originally. The obvious issue with this is that it isn't conventional wiring. We'd really advise everyone with any wiring that appears odd to find someone who knows what they're doing, who can analyze things with a meter and figure out the best course of action. It should be an electrician, but because installation should ideally be simple anyway, it can be done by someone who simply knows what they're doing! The installer always needs to know what is HOT and what is NOT whenever working with wires. You should not be switching the common wires; only switch the HOT wires. POST COMMENT
